  • Initial Situation

After learning that over 96% of beauty supply consumers are black but only 3% are owned by black small business owners, Jessica Kwalli was inspired to open a beauty supply store that served as a safe space for its customers.
  • How the SBDC helped

The Michigan SBDC Southeast Region and business consultant Kay Reisen worked with the Detroit-based small business to help write a business plan, understand the industry, provide market research and more. Jessica teamed up with the MI SBDC to transform the business idea in May 2020 and turn it into a small business. After being referred to SBA she was shortly referred to the MI SBDC.
  • Success

Recently graduated, and winner of retail bootcamp for Tech Town and a winner for the ProsperUs Detroit award, Jessica Kwalli’s beauty supply store serves as a safe space for her community; the same community to which she hires from.

And for any other person that is on this entrepreneur journey, it’s about continuing to persevere. Don’t take no as an answer. Continue to keep going.”
