Not The Cake Lady

When Celeste Jones first connected with Michigan SBDC Senior Business Consultant Harry Blecker, she was a talented baker making extra income by selling her delicious cakes and desserts from home. But during their conversation, it became clear that many of her recipes didn’t meet Cottage Law guidelines, meaning she would have to either stop selling or adjust her recipes to align with Health Department regulations. It was a turning point for Celeste, and Harry saw an opportunity to help her take the next big step.

Harry referred her to the Michigan SBDC’s Uplift Michigan – I-69 Corridor initiative, where Celeste began learning the nuts and bolts of starting a small business. “In class, I shared my struggles, and my classmates shared their stories of overcoming obstacles as food entrepreneurs. Their encouragement and ideas pushed me to think outside the box,” Celeste shared.

With weekly one-on-one support from Michigan SBDC Consultants Adrian Montague and James Shuttleworth, Celeste explored creative new recipes that complied with Cottage Law, allowing her to keep baking. She tested her creations at local vendor events, where her treats sold out. The success from these events funded her enrollment in a ServeSafe class, helping her take another critical step toward operating legally and sustainably. Even with a temporarily adjusted menu, Celeste kept her loyal customers, catering snack packages for parties and events.

Celeste’s journey didn’t stop there. She connected with Sean Gartland, Director of Flint Food Works, who helped her design a site plan and develop standard operating procedures. This preparation allowed her to apply for her Department of Agriculture license and pass her site review with flying colors. The Michigan SBDC team also guided her through filing for her LLC and EIN, officially establishing her business.

Celeste’s dedication paid off. She has now graduated beyond Cottage Law baking and earned her USDA license to serve prepackaged foods. “With this license, my business can sell up to $250,000 worth of product before I need to transition to the next license level!” Celeste shared with excitement.

Her story is a testament to what’s possible when grit, support, and creativity come together. From a home baker to a thriving entrepreneur, Celeste’s journey shows how small steps can lead to big milestones.
