In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, African Americans wanted to express themselves by embracing their naturally kinky, curly hair, according to Nefertiti (Angela) Harris. “We sought to have a maintained, professional and stylish look without the use of hot combers, perms and other potentially damaging styling techniques. Many women, in particular, were coming into a new spiritual awakening making changes inside and out. We were shedding old stereotypes of ‘bad hair.’”

Nefertiti embraced the journey into the art of natural hair care by taking classes, participating in workshops and interning in a natural hair salon – all while raising her children. “I didn’t want someone else to raise my kids. I was a young mother who couldn’t afford to continue going to school. I needed an income and autonomy over my schedule, so I started my business out of a co-working space.”

Nefertiti had an existing relationship with Michigan SBDC Southeast Region Business Consultant Rita Hillman and decided to become a Client while she was leasing space in Midtown Detroit. When the opportunity came up to purchase a building there, she and Rita discussed the possibilities.  It took a collaborative effort working with Invest Detroit, the Detroit Development Fund, and Nefertiti winning a City of Detroit Motor City Match cash grant for her to open Textures by Nefertiti, a hair salon that focuses on the cultivation and care of natural, kinky, and curlier hair.

Today, Nefertiti views herself as a spiritual coach to individuals who are ready for the process of embracing their natural hair. Combining her knowledge of natural hair care, fashion and energy-balancing meditation, she now offers a holistic spa experience at a new location. Nefertiti has also launched a new line of hair products under the brand name Mami Wata.

“While the money’s nice, it is not my primary motivation – I want to inspire and help other young women achieve their own independence,” said Nefertiti. “It’s been an honor for me to be part of Nefertiti’s journey,” echoed Rita.
