Support for Small Businesses Impacted by the Ice Storms
The recent severe ice storms beginning on March 28, 2025 have presented significant challenges for many small businesses across Northern Michigan. We understand that you may be facing power outages, property damage, inventory loss, and disruption to your operations. The Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is here to support you through this difficult time. Asking for help isn’t always easy, but we are here, ready to listen and provide practical support no matter how big or small your business.
What should you do right now?
- Assess the Damage: Carefully document all damage to your property, equipment, and inventory. Take photos and videos for insurance purposes and potential disaster relief applications.
- Contact Your Insurance Provider: Reach out to your insurance company immediately to understand your coverage for property damage, business interruption, and other potential losses.
- Keep Records: Maintain detailed records of all expenses related to the storm, including repairs, temporary solutions, and lost revenue. This information will be important for insurance claims and potential aid applications.
- Gather Your Current Financials: Gather and keep track of your current profit & loss statements, balance sheets, and recent tax returns (both business and personal) for potential loan requests and grant funding.
- Communicate with Your Customers and Suppliers: Let them know your current operating status and any potential delays. Clear communication can help maintain relationships during this challenging time.
