Early last week it was reported there was a GoDaddy WordPress Data breach. GoDaddy confirmed this breach and indicated it impacts 1.2 million users. GoDaddy said the breach impacts both active and inactive users of those using WordPress. It is being reported that both active and inactive user email addresses and customer numbers were exposed, while database usernames and passwords were exposed for active users as well.
What you can do
If you are a GoDaddy customer it is recommended you update your passwords for GoDaddy and potentially your passwords for your websites. This is always good practice to do when a breach occurs. Next you will want to stay alert for any suspicious activity on your accounts. You will also want to avoid falling for any possible phishing emails. Lastly you will also want to monitor any purchasing card or financial accounts you use with GoDaddy for suspicious activity.
Being prepared is key
While you generally aren’t able to prevent being part of a third party breach like this one, you can still take steps to be prepared. It is important to always be vigilant of your accounts and to regularly look for signs of compromise. When a third party solution is compromised it is important you know what systems and data that third party had access to. Make sure you have your incident response playbook ready to go for any sign of a cyber attack.
Be CyberSmart
Being CyberSmart means taking a proactive approach to your cyber risk. Creating those good habits so you can ensure you are doing the right thing. It is also important to know what your bad cybersecurity practices are so you can stop doing them.
Even if you are not impacted by the GoDaddy WordPress data breach it is still a great time to get prepared.
