As an in-flight fuel specialist with the United States Air Force, Michael Weir learned discipline and order, the ability to perform under pressure and how to build trust with those around him. Those qualities and that military mindset are what continue to drive Mike in his civilian life. After serving over two decades in the United States Air Force, a transition into the martial arts seemed like a natural fit.

Mike’s passion for martial arts started when he joined a martial arts studio with his family in 2006.  It wasn’t long before he moved up in the ranks and joined an instructor team. Then shortly after he found himself helping open a new school in Lapeer. After going through that process, he knew that he wanted to pursue entrepreneurship and open his own studio. He started a franchise with PKSA in Port Huron, opening the doors in 2010.

Having been in business for more than a decade, Mike has built a reputation committed to teaching traditional martial arts while improving the concentration, self-discipline, respect, leadership skills, focus, self-confidence and physical fitness of his students. In addition to martial arts classes, his team offers traditional sword classes and krav maga fitness classes.

Mike’s relationship with the Michigan SBDC first began when his studio was forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mike knew that he needed help in order for his business to survive, and he knew he needed a financial plan to be successful.  With the help of the Michigan SBDC, he was able to find assistance in identifying funding options and eventually finding the funding he needed to keep his business going.  Mike has been highly successful in growing his business, and after reaching capacity, he decided to leave the PKSA franchise with the help and knowledge he gained from the Michigan SBDC, he started his own martial arts studio, Blue Water Martial Arts.   “Without the help of the Michigan SBDC, we would not be here today.  Their guidance and assistance during COVID-19 provided much-needed help to keep us going and to get on the other side, to where now we are comfortable venturing out on our own.”

Master Weir’s involvement in the community goes above and beyond, from donating his time and skills to the Port Huron Parks and Recreation Community, to being an active board member of the St. Clair Chamber, to coordinating an annual Toys for Tots campaign at his business. He also serves on testing and certification boards as well. His giving doesn’t stop there, as he coordinates and hosts an annual event called Force Against Hunger. This event raises money to make Thanksgiving food baskets for families in need. These boxes contain everything needed to make a full Thanksgiving dinner, complete with turkey, a five-pound bag of potatoes and all of the fixings.

In conclusion, Mike’s journey from military service to entrepreneurship is a testament to his resilience, discipline and commitment to both his business and community. Through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, he leveraged the support of the Michigan SBDC not only to keep his business afloat, but also to grow and eventually establish his own martial arts studio. His dedication extends beyond his professional success as he continues to give back through community involvement and charitable initiatives. Mike’s story is a powerful example of how hard work, strategic guidance and a passion for helping others can lead to long-lasting impact.
