Connecting and Protecting Devices
As we kick off October we want to remind you to “Do your Part”. Coincidentally, this is the theme of the National Cyber Security Alliance’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month. All October we will be discussing how you can do your part in protecting the devices, networks, and data you use every day!
If You Connect Your Device, Protect Your Device
Every internet capable device creates a vulnerable point in small business and home networks. It is important to understand the risks associated with owning these devices. Cyber-criminals use these vulnerable points to gain access to other connected devices, networks, and most importantly small business data!
Steps You Can Take to Connect and Protect Your Devices
Every internet connected device can pose their own challenges and procedures to protect them. Each device will have unique settings available, some with very limited options while others with robust configurations that require professional assistance. It is always important to reach out for assistance when required.
When connecting devices to the internet, the following are considered best practices – especially for the first time!
-
Update devices either prior to connecting (if possible) or once they are connected. Perform updates regularly after this.
-
Update software or apps either prior to connecting (if possible) or once they are connected. Perform updates regularly after this.
-
Enable passwords, passcodes, or lock screens to access the device.
-
Backup all important small business data that are stored on these devices, regularly.
-
Think about the links clicked, the files downloaded, and the websites visited.
