Detroit Klaws

For many, the “claw machine” brings back memories of the attempt to capture a prize at carnival midways or movie theater lobbies. But for Koothy Pian and David Pian, the founders of Detroit Klaws, the claw machine is a bridge connecting a thriving business opportunity to cultures, community and philanthropy.

Based in Troy, Detroit Klaws is a family-owned arcade designed to integrate Asian gaming culture with the local community. Unlike the solitary experience of video games or home consoles, Detroit Klaws offers an interactive environment featuring claw machines and kinetic stepping games, along with a “trade-up” wall that allows players to exchange smaller wins for larger prizes.

The husband-and-wife team brings complementary skills to the venture. Koothy, who manages the day-to-day operations, brings extensive experience from her time as a general manager and training leader in the hospitality industry. David, who works in public accounting, handles the financial and business strategies. He saw the business potential in both Koothy’s operational expertise and the concept itself, noting that while the industry is ubiquitous on street corners in China and Japan, it is just picking up speed in the U.S. and has huge growth potential.

The couple had a strong vision and solid business backgrounds, and they determined that securing the capital needed to launch a brick-and-mortar entertainment venue is a critical success factor. When they approached Michigan State University Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) for financing, the credit union referred them to the Michigan SBDC for assistance in acclimating to the world of small business with tools and resources in this space.

They were paired with Senior Business Consultant Diana Dimitroff, who helped guide them through small business resources and navigating various resources federal and state organizations had to offer. As a result, the Pians built a solid business case which formed a firm foundation in securing a substantial loan from MSUFCU to launch their business.

Beyond family entertainment, Koothy and David are committed to community impact. David serves on the committee for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Detroit Gala, and their business actively supports the St. Jude mission. The couple firmly believes in the cause that no children should die in the dawn of their lives and would like to use Detroit Klaws as an avenue to contribute to that mission. As David explains, their goal is to become social entrepreneurs in contributing to the Detroit community.

With the grand opening of the Troy location behind them, the Pians’ bond with the Michigan SBDC will grow even stronger, with plans to continue working with Diana to manage their growth strategy and operations.
