Small Business Support Programs Making a Splash in the Blue Economy

Michigan’s freshwater tech scene is ready to make waves in 2026. A natural laboratory for BlueTech startups and small businesses tackling water scarcity, microplastics and smart infrastructure, Michigan is home to several innovative accelerator programs, pitch competitions and regional hubs.

Full Steam Ahead

In 2026, three major programs will launch to support the creation, growth and scaling of water-focused startups.

  • The Great Lakes Blue Tech Challenge, hosted by Northwestern Michigan College (NMC), will be giving away $55,000 in seed funding. Applications open January 16, 2026 and the finalists will present their pitches at the Lakebed 2030 conference in Traverse City later this year. The Challenge returns with new features and support for competing startups.
  • Aqua Action is launching their next iteration of the AquaHacking Binational program in February. AquaHacking is designed to bridge the gap for U.S. and Canadian startups focused on water technology, Over a 10-month period, the program guides teams from identifying challenges to developing effective solutions. The program is ideal for early stage ventures, researchers and student-led teams.
  • The gener8tor Great Lakes Innovation Accelerator offers mentorship and a formal program in addition to $100,000 in non-dilutive funding for startups in the blue economy. The application deadline is May 31, 2026.

Port SmartZone

Michigan’s SmartZone network is home to affordable co-working spaces, mentoring and provides the pathway to specialized resources and programs such as the Business Accelerator Fund and Emerging Technologies Fund. Several of these regional hubs have direct water access.

  • The MTEC SmartZone is home to Michigan Technological University and the Great Lakes Research Center where research is conducted on water analysis, watershed data, and wave and coastal processes.
  • In Sault Sainte Marie Headwaters North manages the SmartZone where Lake Superior State University’s Center for Freshwater Research and Education explores aquaculture, fisheries and invasive species.
  • Traverse City is building a new state-of- the-art facility: the Freshwater Research Innovation Center. The Center will have over 35,000 square feet of lab, office and co-working space. A partnership between Discovery Pier, NMC and others, the building is currently under construction. The foundation has been set and the core of the building should begin to be constructed in the coming months with an expected opening in 2027.
