There’s a log cabin in Mecosta where cosmetologist Stephanie Shusta-Face has created a respite: a holistic “happy place.” Clients come to treat themselves to customized day spa services for brows, lashes, sunless tanning, waxing, nail and skin care – even hypnotherapy. Skin Deep Studio focuses on clean beauty, using only cruelty-free sustainable and vegan products.

Things weren’t so blissful at the start for the small business. Stephanie had worked in the spa for two years when she decided she wanted to buy it and reports that “every lender laughed me out the door. I wanted to find financing, but needed a business plan and financial projections. I met with Michigan SBDC Senior Business Consultant Marie Elliott, who helped me immensely. She provided me with a list of alternative lenders and also provided market research.”

Stephanie ultimately secured a business loan from Michigan Women Forward, and the business has grown in size to warrant adding two employees. And while she welcomes the financial success of the business, Stephanie also takes pride in creating a “safe space for people, no matter who they are, or where they come from. It’s that connection with clients transforming themselves that I really enjoy.”

Future plans for the small business include adding services and building Skin Deep Studio’s reputation as a destination spa. According to Stephanie, “Our primary clients already come to us from as far away as Big Rapids and Mt. Pleasant. We would love to expand our service footprint even further.”
