Hip-hop culture is the world-wide movement that led to “breaking” or breakdancing, as evidenced by its debut at the summer 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France. In West Michigan, that movement is led by Janeli Foy, owner of Teknique Street Dance Academy. Janeil is known as a “visual and performance artist;” he is well-respected, smart and considered a “creative genius” in the breaking community.
Janeil is the fourth owner of the 20-year-old Teknique, and recently was referred to the Michigan SBDC by a mutual friend, Grand Valley State University Professor James Sanford. Janeil sought advice on growing his business in a more sustainable way in order to ensure long-term viability, and wanted a cost-effective, outside professional opinion.
Both Michigan SBDC Regional Director Ed Garner and Certified Business Consultant Jay Martinez met with Janeil. Together they gathered information and provided valuable feedback for him to consider along with promises to follow-up and provide any future needed help. Some of the many suggestions provided included an improved business website and record-keeping system to support increased business. They also discussed developing distinct profit centers for lessons, rehearsals, live performances and publications.
“Overall, I found that having an independent review of my current business practices was extremely helpful in defining my target customer markets and planning for future business success. I also appreciated that these services were available at no financial cost thanks to federal and state funding,” said Janeil. A visionary entrepreneur, Janeil is propelling Teknique Street Dance Academy to new heights with the guidance of the Michigan SBDC.
