Grand Valley State University affiliate faculty member Matt Larson, an experienced RVer, created RV City Hosts to connect self-contained RV owners with unique urban and suburban overnight parking. “I was tired of not being able to easily visit friends in the city or attend events without the logistical nightmare of finding suitable RV parking,” Matt explained. “I knew there had to be a better way to bridge the gap.”
With a vision to create a network of diverse hosts, including small businesses, breweries, churches, and even urban parking lots, Matt sought guidance to navigate the complexities of launching and growing his platform. That’s when he reached out to the Michigan SBDC and met Jay Martinez, a certified business consultant.
Jay provided valuable resources, including market research data that helped Matt better understand the competitive landscape and identify key opportunities. Jay also offered guidance on developing a robust launch strategy and connecting with potential partners and municipalities.
A significant early win came when Matt’s vision resonated with the local startup community, earning him first prize in the Start Garden 100 competition. This momentum continued as he participated in a Techtown Accelerator program focused on customer discovery that validated the widespread need for his innovative approach to RV hospitality, and tech stack advising with the help of Michigan SBDC Technology Consultant Nancy Benovich Gilby.
Matt’s company recently acquired the well-established Vanly.app with a strong user base. This strategic merger has significantly expanded his reach, adding thousands of users and hosts to his network, with over 40,000 app downloads and the establishment of more than 2,750 host listings across all 50 states.
“This acquisition provides us with an incredible foundation,” Matt shared. “Vanly’s hosts were primarily homeowner driveways and land, and my vision is to build upon that by adding more business locations and city-based host categories. Examples include hotels, breweries, retailers, restaurants, churches, city-owned lots and various other small businesses. This will not only offer more diverse and convenient options for RV travelers but also drive local economic development by encouraging users to spend money at local establishments. We are actively working with cities to streamline regulations and permitting processes to make urban RV stays a seamless experience.” “We’re preparing to launch a pilot in Detroit soon to track and showcase the economic impact of RV tourism in the area. When RVers book a stay, they’ll receive a complimentary gift card that can be used at a variety of local restaurants and retailers.
Data shows that the average hotel guest spends $250–$500 per day in downtown areas—and RV travelers often have even more disposable income.”
“The Michigan SBDC has been instrumental in helping me navigate the challenges of launching and growing my business,” Matt added. “Their resources and expert guidance have been invaluable as I work to bring this vision to life, especially as we expand.”
