Nestled in the heart of Burr Oak, a town rich in history but facing modern challenges, Iron Bridge and Whiskey Creek Tavern stand as a beacon of hope and renewal. This venture is more than a business; it’s a mission led by Terry and Robin Conklin to breathe new life into their beloved hometown.
Terry and Robyn returned to Burr Oak in 2018 with dreams of retirement. However, a unique opportunity presented itself in 2022, when they purchased a block of buildings on Third Street. Buying the buildings was not just an investment; it was a commitment to restoring Burr Oak’s charm and vibrancy.
To help get them started, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation referred the couple to the Michigan SBDC, where Terry and Robyn sought assistance in reopening the local tavern and renovating two upper units as their home. They worked with Senior Business Consultant Wendy Spreenberg on accounting and cash flow management, creating a business plan, and marketing and sales. The couple completed loft renovations by December 2022 and opened the doors to the tavern in July 2024.
Terry and Robyn’s vision extends well beyond the tavern. Recognizing the urgent need for housing and the economic boost that new businesses can bring, they plan to renovate additional upper units to create affordable housing for teachers and traveling nurses. All of this renovation activity has sparked interest from local entrepreneurs, including a barber shop and a 3-D printing business, to occupy retail spaces on Third Street. Plans also include a 236 Coffee Club, a membership-based coffee shop and event space, fostering community gatherings and local commerce.
Iron Bridge and Whiskey Creek Tavern represents Terry and Robyn’s dedication to preserving Burr Oak’s heritage while fostering a vibrant future. With a strong community focus, innovative offerings, and a commitment to local revitalization, the tavern is set to become a cherished landmark, bringing people together and sparking new growth in this historic village.
