The FBI recently discovered that foreign cyber actors have compromised over half a million routers and other networked devices worldwide using a malware called VPNFilter. The malware can collect network information, exploit network devices, and to block network traffic. This form of malware can allow access of confidential data and disrupt normal business operations.
Both the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and DHS (Department of Homeland Security) are recommending owners of SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) routers to reboot these devices and update the router’s firmware, if available, as well. Routers are usually missed when updating devices, but as the router is the gateway to the internet, it is crucial they are updated regularly.
