It’s no coincidence that Henry David Thoreau’s quote “The greatest compliment which was ever paid to me, was when someone asked what I thought and attended to my answer” is on Bright Light Early Care & Education’s website. Words such as “wonder” and “curiosity,” along with imagery such as a lighthouse, feature prominently on the daycare center’s home page. Committed to Thoreau’s philosophy, Lindsey Potter, owner of Bright Light, hopes to nurture this kind of childlike wonder in young hearts and minds.

A former public school and pre-school teacher, Lindsey saw the need to offer high-quality daycare in a decidedly different way. After scouting several locations, she purchased a historic Battle Creek barn located in a park-like setting and built out a space where children could learn through play – indoors and out. Once the facility was in place, Lindsey deliberately engaged parents and staff committed to strong, stable relationships.

Lindsey recognized that obtaining startup funding for a new daycare facility could be a challenge, so she reached out to the Michigan SBDC for assistance. She was paired with several Business Consultants, including Mary Sue Hoffman, who connected her to First Children’s Finance. As a result, Lindsey successfully secured financing and Bright Light now welcomes up to 85 children daily to the center.
