Dr. Aisha Harris, a Georgetown University School of Medicine graduate who completed her Family Medicine residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago, saw the need to focus on relationship health when she returned to her hometown of Flint – a community where many have limited access to care. 

Her solution: to open her own Direct Primary Care (DPC) practice offering a very personalized approach to change the long term health care of patients. DPC is an innovative healthcare provider alternative that offers patients access to high-functioning healthcare with a simple, flat, affordable membership fee. 

Aisha reached out to the Michigan SBDC and Regional Director Janis Mueller to review her startup’s business and marketing plans, financial projections and pricing. In the process, Aisha made connections with the Flint/Genesee small business ecosystem to begin building her network and creating outreach plans. 

“I know medicine, but I didn’t know business,” said Aisha. “The options offered to me by the Michigan SBDC meant I could work at my own pace, whether it was on-demand videos, Focus Four™ or more. Janis was especially helpful because she’s local, knows everyone, and gave me specific referrals.”
