In the heart of Mid Michigan, a new kind of social hub is redefining the traditional “night out.” Block House, LLC, an innovative hybrid enterprise, integrates a full-service restaurant and bar with a professional esports gaming center and league operations. Founded by Nick Lux and Anthony Collamati, the business has successfully evolved from a 2019 pre-launch concept into a multi-location brand with thriving facilities in Alma and Olivet.
Their unique model has garnered national attention, including a feature on PBS’s “Destination Michigan,” positioning the founders as pioneers at the intersection of technology and hospitality. However, the path to this level of success was marked by significant obstacles that required both resilience and strategic support.
The timing of the business launch could not have been more challenging. Just as Nick and Anthony were prepared to open their doors, the COVID-19 pandemic arrived. Because of their “pre-opening” status, the business was ineligible for initial federal relief like the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) or the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL).
To survive, Nick and Anthony pivoted to a take-out and limited gaming model. As they eventually moved toward an expansion in Olivet, they faced a severe cash crunch driven by cost overruns. The founders needed to consolidate high-interest debt and secure the national corporate sponsorships required to scale their league operations. To find a way forward, they turned to the Michigan SBDC.
Since 2019, Business Growth Consultant Jeff Punches has provided steady support to the enterprise. The Michigan SBDC provided access to LivePlan software, allowing Nick and Anthony to develop the professional financial projections necessary to attract investors and lenders. Jeff also served as a critical financial strategy sounding board during the company’s most difficult transitions.
In addition to financial planning, the Michigan SBDC offered:
- Operational Resources: Access to RestaurantOwner.com to help refine hospitality margins.
- Expert Networking: Connections to industry specialists in marketing, restaurant operations, and league development.
- Collaborative Partnerships: Coordination with CMURC to assist with the growth of the business’s league development aspects.
The result was transformative economic impact. Block House successfully secured a complex, multi-faceted financing package for the Olivet location, involving commercial loans, vendor loans, and a strategic equity investment from The University of Olivet.
Today, the business is more than just a place to play; it is a blueprint for the hybrid gaming-hospitality industry. By improving operational margins and brand visibility, Nick and Anthony have built a sustainable, scalable model.
“The Michigan SBDC and, Jeff Punches in particular, have played a definitive role in the launch and growth of Block House by providing access to networks, resources, and guidance,” said Nick.
Through perseverance and a willingness to leverage the resources available to Michigan small business owners, Nick and Anthony have turned their “pre-launch concept” into a prominent Michigan success story.
